Emergency electrical faults, explained

Not every urgent fault needs someone that minute. Some can be made safe with a switch while you wait; some mean the problem is on the street rather than in your house. The first thing we do on the phone is work out which, so you are not left waiting in the dark for the wrong kind of help.

Arrival times depend on where we are and what is already booked. We will not quote a response time we cannot keep. If we cannot reach you soon enough, we will say so, so you can call someone who can.

02Signs and scope

When it counts as urgent, and what we do.

Common problems and warning signs

  • The whole house has lost power and the neighbours have not
  • A burning smell, smoke or scorching near a socket, switch or the board
  • The main RCD trips and will not reset with everything unplugged
  • Water has got into light fittings or sockets
  • Exposed or damaged cables after building work or a leak
  • Sparking or crackling from an accessory

What the service includes

  • Clear safety advice on the phone before anything else
  • An honest arrival time, or a straight answer if we cannot help
  • Making the installation safe on arrival
  • Tracing and repairing the fault where possible on the same visit
  • A written explanation of the cause and any follow-up needed
  • Certification for any repair carried out
03Process

How the work runs, start to finish.

  1. Tell us what you need

Call, or send the quote form with a photo if it helps. We ask a few questions and book a visit or survey at a time that suits you.

  2. Survey and written quote

We look at the existing installation, explain what we find and send a fixed written quote that says exactly what is included.

  3. The work, done carefully

Floors protected, dust controlled, power kept on where possible, and the house left safe every evening.

  4. Tested, certified, handed over

Every circuit is tested. You receive the certificate, a labelled circuit chart and a walk-round of what was done.

Urgent faults: frequently asked questions

What should I do if the power goes off?

Check whether your neighbours have power. If they do not, the problem is on the network: call 105, the national power cut number, to reach Northern Powergrid. If only your house is off, check the consumer unit for a tripped switch.

What if I can smell burning?

Switch off at the main switch if you can reach it safely, stop using the affected socket or appliance, and call us. If there is smoke or flame, get everyone out and call 999.

Do you charge more for urgent call-outs?

Urgent work outside normal hours costs more, and we tell you the rate on the phone before we set off. There is no charge for the advice.
