EV charger installation, explained

Every installation starts with the supply. We check the main fuse rating, the existing load on the house, the earthing arrangement and whether the consumer unit has space. Most chargers include load management, which reduces the charge rate when the house is busy, so an upgraded supply is rarely needed.

We notify Northern Powergrid, the network operator for the North East, as required when a charger is connected. We register the charger, set it up on the app with you, and show you how to schedule charging on a cheaper overnight tariff.

03Process

How the work runs, start to finish.

  1. Tell us what you need

    Call, or send the quote form with a photo if it helps. We ask a few questions and book a visit or survey at a time that suits you.

  2. Survey and written quote

    We look at the existing installation, explain what we find and send a fixed written quote that says exactly what is included.

  3. The work, done carefully

    Floors protected, dust controlled, power kept on where possible, and the house left safe every evening.

  4. Tested, certified, handed over

    Every circuit is tested. You receive the certificate, a labelled circuit chart and a walk-round of what was done.

EV charging: frequently asked questions

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most home installations take half a day to a day, depending on the distance from the consumer unit to the charger and the route in between.

Tethered or untethered?

A tethered charger has its cable attached, which is quicker to use every day. An untethered charger has a socket, which looks tidier and suits households with more than one type of car. We show you both on the survey.

Are there grants for home chargers?

Government support has changed several times and currently depends on the type of property and who lives there. We check what applies to you at the time of quoting, rather than promising something that may have closed.

Can a charger go on a detached garage?

Yes. We run a suitably sized armoured cable, usually underground or along a wall, and assess the earthing at the garage end.
