EV charger and garden lighting at a new-build home

A smart home charger, outdoor power and a restrained garden lighting scheme, installed as one planned job rather than three separate ones.

01The requirement

The owners had an electric car on order and wanted a charger ready for delivery day. While we were there, they wanted power at the far end of the garden for tools and a pond pump, and lighting that made the garden usable in the evening without lighting up the neighbours.

02The condition and the constraint

The consumer unit was in the garage on the opposite side of the house from the drive, and the rear garden was already landscaped with a porcelain patio laid the year before. Nothing could be dug up. The house also had a PME earthing arrangement, which has to be accounted for when a charger is installed outdoors.

03The work completed

  • A survey of the supply, existing load and earthing, with a charger chosen that includes load management and suitable open-PEN protection
  • A dedicated charger circuit run through the garage and along the house wall in neat, straight conduit
  • A weatherproof outdoor double socket beside the drive
  • An armoured supply to the end of the garden, run along the boundary fence line and under an existing path edge rather than through the patio
  • Low bollard lights along the path, two spike uplights on a birch tree, and wall lights either side of the garden doors, on separate switching from the kitchen
  • Northern Powergrid notified, the charger registered, and charging scheduled on the owners' overnight tariff

04Safety and disruption

Work was split so the house supply was only off for a short, agreed period. Every outdoor circuit has RCD protection and IP-rated fittings, and the garden supply ends at a weatherproof isolator so the pump can be switched off safely for maintenance.

05The result

The charger was working before the car arrived, and the owners were shown how to schedule it from the app. The garden has usable power at both ends and a lighting scheme that can be switched in layers from the house. The patio was never lifted.
